| Tezuka's more notorious work: Astro Boy |
For as long as I can remember, I have fostered a profound interest in the visual and storytelling art of graphic novels and their television counterparts. Born in Europe in 1996 and having moved to New York at the age of three I was exposed to a variety of different comics prompting me as a young child to explore the many creations of various esteemed artists and writers such as Lewis Trondheim, Art Spiegelman and Osamu Tezuka, all of which carried profound impacts in their respective fields of work as well as influencing my passion for drawing and recording. Their styles radically different, these artists and their entourage built a world beyond reality that has left a legacy easily seen by many as a landmark milestone in the history of graphic media.
Having grown up in what many of my generation refer to as the golden age of cartoons, television channels from the late 90’s and early 2000’s including nickelodeon and cartoon network inspired the imaginations of myself and my peers, spurring creativity and a cultural mindset for us millennials. A lot of what we consider nostalgia lies in the programing of that era of tv. I can still recall setting my alarm early to catch certain shows, and staying up until after my parents went to bed to watch the more mature programs. The cool shows were always on after 10pm.
Those uninterested in this form of media generally see graphic novels and animated shows as distractions, yet the artistic demeanor in which they are produced leaves something to be appreciated. It is more than just colors on a screen or drawings on a page, underneath the visual there is a story to tell, characters to relate to and so on.
With these dynamic sources of animated inspiration I plan to create work that is fun to the observer and memorable; content borrowing from my predecessors that can be viewed and enjoyed by many especially in a time of heightened political anxiety. I hope to one day be able to participate in a project that people can see on the internet and share amongst themselves, as another agreeable and potentially nostalgia inducing memory.
